Another asteroid “scratched” from Earth

An asteroid about the size of a building block passed, on Saturday, March 9, relatively close to Earth, the latest phenomenon from a series of celestial objects that have recently approached our planet, including the asteroid that split over Russia causing the injury of 1,500 people.

The asteroid, which was discovered just six days ago, was 140 meters long and passed 950,000 kilometers from Earth at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time. This distance is about two and a half times the distance to the moon, although close enough to the data of the Universe.

“The scary thing is that this is something we did not even know about,” said Slooh Space Camera, president of the astronomical team, during an Internet show featuring live images of the asteroid through a telescope in the Canary Islands.

Moving at a speed of about 41,843 kilometers per hour, the asteroid could destroy an entire city if it crashed to Earth, said a member of the Slooh team. “One of the reasons we are seeing more and more of these objects now is because there are a lot more people looking,” he said.
